Do You Need a Medicare Supplement Plan?

In an era prior to the financial crisis that is going on now, full of cuts in the budget and lots of other devastating things, Medicare was actually a reliable program, that most of the time took total care of a persons need for medical care, without having to add a ton of supplements to the program. However, over the past decade or so, many programs are being taken off or slimmed down all over the place, and Medicare is one of those.

Changes in Medicare were necessary for the program to remain viable, and medical procedures that used to be covered by the basic plan must now be paid for by the recipient.

Taxpayer money has always funded Medicare. Some of the taxes collected by the government were to be set aside for the Medicare program.

Unfortunately, the cost of medical treatments have skyrocketed, and the funding that Medicare has been receiving from our taxes are just not enough to pay for the treatments that people need. Additionally, lawmakers have basically ignored these problems, and now what was once a minor paper cut has become infected, and is now in need of major surgery. If only the government had bothered to act sooner, we may not be in the mess that we are in right now; unfortunately in this economic climate, we have so many problems that Medicare isn't even a priority. Although lawmakers are trying to "shore up" the various government programs out there, there's just not enough money to do so - and the three trillion dollar national debt is certainly not encouraging us to spend more. Why is it that our leaders, who knew this was coming, did nothing to prevent it?

Despite the cuts in Medicare coverage, it is still a good plan. Medicare's inadequacy is that there is less coverage for some outpatient services, special health issues, etc. that were formerly paid. So many recipients get a Medicare supplement plan to fill the gaps. There are a variety of supplements that cover different types of care, and Medicare Advantage is the broadest plan available.

A Medicare supplement plan can decrease a person's out-of-pocket medical expenses if they choose one wisely. Go to www.medicare.gov to see whether this additional coverage could be beneficial to you. You can review a list of all the current supplement plans and what coverage they provide to discover which one, if any, would meet your needs. For example, a supplement might cover some of the medications or procedures that you are responsible for now. If your monthly out-of-pocket expenses are $200 and you could pay a Medicare Supplement Plan premium of only $100 per month, you would definitely see the savings.

Check out Medicare online at www.medicare.gov for all the information you need on getting a supplement plan. The great news is that if you find the right supplement, you will have better coverage for less money.
